BHUBANESWAR: A special vigilance judge on Thursday sentenced Barabati-Cuttack Congress MLA Mohammed Moquim, former IAS officer Vinod Kumar and two others to three years’ rigorous imprisonment in connection with a loan scam.
The court also imposed Rs 50,000 fine on each for the Orissa Rural Housing Development Corporation (ORHDC) scam, committed two decades ago. The other two convicts are Swasti Ranjan Mohapatra, a former company secretary of the ORHDC, and Peeyusdhari Mohanty, director of Metro Builders Pvt Ltd.
The Metro Group, represented by Moquim as the MD, had applied for a Rs 1.5-crore term loan from the ORHDC in 2000 for an apartment project. Kumar was then the MD of ORHDC. Kumar neither placed the loan application before the board of directors nor the loan committee for approval.
He showed undue favours to the real estate company and illegally disbursed the loan. “Income tax returns, Bhubaneswar Development Authority plan and other certificates were forged by Metro Builders,” special public prosecutor Hemant Kumar Swain said.
